About the Course:

Our course will encourage and nurture imagination through a new language of expression called Kathak. The Kathak Dance course will make students aware and believe in their capacity. It will nudge young minds to delight in the world of arts around them.

Faculty

Debashree Bhattacharya is a kolkata based Kathak practitioner, choreographer and teacher. Her inquisitive and imaginative mind resonates through her creative endeavours.She is an artist keen on understanding, analysing and redefining the Kathak form on one hand and Kathak informed body on the other.

The course will cover:

1. Introduction to the brief history of Kathak Information on the other classical dance forms of India

2. Understanding the body and its various parts Basic steps of Kathak

3. Simple hand movements along with steps Linear movements & circular movements Introduction to Spins (Chakkars)

4. An introduction to 16 beats time cycle Speed variation

5. Concept of Padhant (keeping beats and recitation of bols)

6. Simple bols and tatkar (rhythmic variations) Understanding of single and double hand gestures

7. Abhinaya – Storytelling through kavits (poems from mythology which are set to rhythm

CREATIVE MOVEMENT COURSES
WAACKING Dance Form
Eligibility: 6+ years
Once a week x 1 hours each

About the Course:

This module offers short term compact workshops on different dance/movement forms with the purpose of experiencing the health benefits (both body and mind) of each form. The body would be made to experience different movement qualities and different ways of exploring the space around it. One would emerge with an enriched movement experience and a better movement vocabulary.

Faculty

Shubha Bangur completed her Masters in Applied Psychology under the University of Calcutta specialising in Industrial Psychology. She completed her PG Diploma in School Counselling and trained in Dance Movement therapy from TISS.

Sangram Mukhopadhyay is an independent and emerging dancer/movement practitioner. His practice emerges from movement training that is experiential and non-institutional and therefore unfolds as a response to contemporary life via text body and movement. Using Whacking/Waacking, a 70s gay club dance style as a primary tool to investigate the gendered lens of performance.

The course will cover:

1. Building a body attitude

2. Encouraging self expression through movement

3. Stress release through movement

4. Intricate limb coordination

Pintu Das is a contemporary dancer, choreographer, and fitness instructor from Kolkata. He started his dance career with “Street Form” and “Cinematic Dance”(Bollywood Dance). He is graduated from Rabindra Bharati University on Bharat Natyam in 2010.

The course will cover:

2. Improving body coordination

3. Building spatial awareness

4. Boost creative thinking

Arjama Dasgupta from Kolkata started dancing since she was three years old. Dance has always been her passion and a way to express her emotions. Her journey began with Bharatnatyam. She was trained by her mother who’s an Indian Classical dancer.Currently she is focusing on the Jamaican street dance, Dancehall. She has taken workshops under Jamaican dancers like Craig Black Eagle and Chad Torrington aka Global Bob.

The course will cover:

1. Feeling confident about one’s body

2. Building a positive body image

3. Introducing fluidity and allowing the body to let go
